About PFLAG Youngstown

As a former steel city in northeast Ohio, Youngstown had no organized gay community in the 1980s. Youngstown Area PFLAG was founded in 1989 by Joe Bordo, an AIDS risk-reduction specialist for the Youngstown City Health District as a safe space for gay men.

Since the early 1990s to the present, the Youngstown chapter has expanded its scope to support LGBTQ people, their family members, and allies. We are registered in Ohio as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

PFLAG envisions a world where diversity is celebrated and all people are respected, valued, and affirmed inclusive of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.

PFLAG promotes the health and well-being of gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual persons through: support, to cope with an adverse society; education, to enlighten an ill-informed public; advocacy, to end discrimination and secure equal rights.

As a chapter affiliate, Youngstown Area PFLAG shares the Vision and Mission of PFLAG National.
