About We Are Family
We Are Family is South Carolina's oldest nonprofit organization dedicated to providing comprehensive, life-affirming programs for LGBTQ young people up to age 24. Based in North Charleston, SC, the organization delivers evidence-based services with measurable impact, with particular focus on serving BIPOC and low-income youth. We Are Family's core service offerings include Social Support Groups and peer discussion forums that provide safe spaces for LGBTQ youth and their families; Gender-Sexuality Alliance (GSA) support and coalition-building programs serving schools and communities throughout the state; the Mental Health Assistance Program featuring free and affirming short-term therapy conducted by qualified professionals; leadership development and social support initiatives; and health and wellness programs grounded in cultural competency. The organization also operates LGBTeach, an evidence-based cultural competency training program for educators and community leaders; the Trans Love Fund, a microgrant program supporting trans and gender nonconforming individuals; and Closet Case Thrift Store, a social enterprise providing gender-affirming products at no cost to TGNC young people. We Are Family's programming extends beyond direct services to include grassroots community organizing, movement building, and advocacy initiatives that empower young people to become agents of change. Founded in 1995 by Tom Myers, a father moved by his son's needs, the organization has grown from direct mail outreach and community education to a comprehensive statewide network. All services are grounded in the organization's core values of imagination, celebration, self-determination, intersectional justice, and education, ensuring that every young person served feels empowered to find their place in their families, communities, and the world.
